Dogs Lose Way In Third Period
SKYRINK, July 22, 2006 – For two periods tonight the Sled Dogs played inspired hockey against a tough Blizzard squad looking to solidify its playoff spot but ultimately fell short. The Dogs own playoff hopes are now in serious jeopardy.
The game can really be separated into two games. The first two periods were characterized by offensive chances for both teams including some sustained pressure in each zone, as well as solid defense disrupting play. Forward Jen Parvinpour notched her first goal of the season and Defenseman Chris Morse added another as the two teams traded goals. Goalie Christine Overbye was also solid between the pipes as the third period began tied 2-2.
The third period was marked by inconsistent Sled Dog play, Swiss cheese defense, and an anemic offensive effort. The result was a dominating effort by the Blizzard and four straight goals-against for the panting Sled Dogs. “It’s a shame what happened to us in the third,” said Doug Gorenstein. “We played so well for two periods, it’s disappointing.”
The Sled Dogs did not quit, however. Late in the game the Dogs shook off the heavy snow and picked up the effort, scoring two goals in the final three minutes of the game. “I can always count on this team to fight and claw,” added Gorenstein. He and Forward Dave Brock had the late goals for the Dogs.
The Sled Dogs next game is July 29 at 5:30pm vs. Tsunami.
